TALKIN' APRIL 6 2010 BLUES John Soeder © 2010 Rolled outta bed About 8:30 a.m. And I had a sensible breakfast By that I mean High-fiber cereal Before my interview with Paquito D’Rivera Then we rode our bikes to my mother’s house By that I mean The kids and I, not Paquito There were odd jobs to be done Including The raking of the lawn And the installation Of screen door windows For lunch I had Swiss cheese On some exceptional rye bread When I got home I checked my e-mail And screwed around on the Internet Did some laundry Fixed some dinner Penne pasta with tomato sauce From! A! Jar! I asked my wife How was your day, babe Then I stole some candy from the kids’ Easter baskets I cannot tell a lie It was delicious Thoreau said The mass of men Lead lives of quiet desperation Who am I to disagree I’m quiet I’m desperate And I’m a man So let’s review the facts about me Where were we now -- oh...right After dinner I got back on my bike And I rode to the auto supply store I bought a tail lamp For the Honda Which I successfully installed By 10 p.m. I was dozing off Anderson Cooper was on And as I drifted into sweet oblivion The last thing I remember is singing this song I’ve got those talkin’ April 6 2010 blues again I’ve got those talkin’ April 6 2010 blues again I’m puttin’ this down So future generations might comprehend I’ve got those talkin’ April 6 2010 blues again

CUTLERY (A LOVE STORY) John Soeder © 2010 Hey diddle diddle The cow jumped over the moon Life was swell But it all went to hell When the fork ran away with the spoon Now the spoon was a lovely lady And the fork was a man of means They say the whole thing started over A plate of rice and beans I’m a liar and a cheat and a scoundrel But I ain’t never hurt no one What I do I do for money What I do I do for love But most of all I do it for fun O Senorita When I’m food for the worms Do me the honor Of speaking of me In favorable terms Now the sharpest knife in the drawer Was the knife himself you see When the fork and the spoon Left him there all alone He said Vengeance belongs to me When it comes to love you can’t fork it over You can’t dish it out with a spoon It cuts like a knife So run for your life Love is lovely But love can be cruel I’m a liar and a cheat and a scoundrel But I ain’t never hurt no one What I do I do for money What I do I do for love But most of all I do it for fun O Senorita When I’m food for the worms Do me the honor Of speaking of me In favorable terms Now the fork and the spoon were spooning By the light of the silvery moon The knife stepped out from the shadows Laughing like a loon And the knife flashed in the moonlight And the fork tried to run away with the spoon Cut to the chase With a smile on his face The knife said Hey spoon, Fork, you Know I’m a liar and a cheat and a scoundrel But I ain’t never hurt no one What I do I do for money What I do I do for love But most of all I do it for fun O Senorita When I’m food for the worms Do me the honor Of speaking of me In favorable terms

ROUND THE BLOCK John Soeder © 2010 When I was a kid Dad would take me by the hand For a walk around our little corner Of the Promised Land And the only world I knew Was just outside my door A square mile at most Who could ask for more When the sun went down On my hometown Round about 8 o’clock You could always find us walking Round the block Past the shag-carpeted vans At the auto dealership With their sci-fi custom paint jobs In the days when those were hip Past the Queen of the Holy Rosary Enshrined by candlelight Past the corner store Where the comic books Could free your mind Past the everyday scenes of American dreams Made of hard work and Sheetrock Duly noted in my travels Round the block Now I’ve been around the world And I’ve had my day Took a few wrong turns Hit a few dead ends Got lost along the way As I retrace my steps In the dying of the light All I ask Is one more chance To get it right When the roll is called up yonder And it’s time to punch the clock Tell the Good Lord I’ve gone walking Round the block When the roll is called up yonder And it’s time to punch the clock Tell the Good Lord I’ve gone walking Round the block

about

Once every generation or so, an artist comes along whose musical talent is undeniable. Who sets the world on fire with his wonderful songs. Whose voice is a ray of light in the darkness.

John Soeder is not that guy.

He begged me to write these liner notes, though, and I really need the money. So here goes:

EARBUD SYMPHONICA is Soeder’s sixth full-length release. (What a pretentious title, right?) It’s a double album at that, with 18 all-new, all-original compositions. Well, not counting the parts nicked from “Frere Jacques.”

Why a double album? Isn’t there enough awful homemade music clogging up the Internet already?

Turns out Soeder found himself swept up in the hype surrounding the “Exile on Main Street” reissue and got the harebrained idea that it might be fun to create a double album of his own. The aforementioned Rolling Stones opus had 18 tracks in its original incarnation, so our would-be jukebox hero responded in kind. The similarities end there, I’m afraid; EARBUD SYMPHONICA was most certainly NOT recorded in the midst of a drug-fueled orgy in the South of France.

The pulsating “Check Check” sets the stage for the whole affair. I detect trace elements of David Bowie, which is an insult not only to David Bowie, but to trace elements everywhere.

“John the Revelator” (originally released as a single in May 2010) amateurishly combines apocalyptic lyrics and a blues progression that Soeder heard played by late greats like Robert Lockwood Jr. and Charles Brown. As far as acoustic ballads are concerned, “Evensong” could be worse, I guess. “Rocking Chair” has its moments; the whistling is OK. “Chlorine Eyes” is a lame attempt at a Beach Boys pastiche, although I suppose the poor bastard’s heart is in the right place.

If virtual albums had sides, Side Two would commence with the retro-flavored “The Last Crumb,” yet another example of Soeder’s well-documented nostalgic streak. It was the first single released from the album, way back in April 2010. “Diorama Box” is a jazz instrumental; Soeder recorded it after his son Sean made a diorama box for school. “Love Is Plagiarism” is a ditty that She & Him will never get around to covering, but Soeder thinks they should. (Dream on, dude.) “Who Do You Think You Are to Keep Waltzing In and Out of My Life” has a very long title.

Side Three, if there were a Side Three, opens with the horn-emblazoned “Shine”; when we discussed it, Soeder mumbled something about a Dave Matthews Band vibe. The techno-pseudo-classical “Earbud Symphonica (Third Movement)” is another instrumental. I do not know, nor do I care, what happened to the other movements. Set against a sparse backdrop of drums, bass, piano and organ, “The Downsized Clown” milks a certain pathos. “Gots the Itch” is completely forgettable. According to Soeder, the kinda-haunting-but-not-really “There Goes the Moon” was conceived as a flip side of sorts to the vastly superior “Here Comes the Sun.” Whatever.

Like most cockamamie schemes by unchecked egomaniacs whose grandiose ambitions exceed their meager capabilities, EARBUD SYMPHONICA runs out of steam long before we arrive at the theoretical Side Four. “Happy Accidents,” a vaguely rootsy toe-tapper, is way too sappy for my tastes, even if the last verse supposedly was inspired by a conversation with David Johansen. “Talkin’ April 6 2010 Blues” isn’t a proper talkin’ blues, because there is too much singin’ and not enough talkin’. “Cutlery (A Love Story)” is probably the dumbest tune ever. And the piano ballad “Round the Block” attempts to wrap up everything on a poignant note, although by then, it’s far too late.

So there you have it: EARBUD SYMPHONICA. Sixty minutes of your life that you will NEVER get back. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
