THE DIVINE FLYSWATTER John Soeder © 2011 A long time ago Before you were born The whole human race Fell from grace Fathers, mothers, sons and daughters No one is safe From the divine flyswatter You better stand up straight You better say your prayers You better count your blessings And don’t put on airs Cross yourself with holy water Ain’t no escaping The divine flyswatter Every day Every night We’re just trying to survive Whatever gets you through the day Whatever gets you through the night Whatever No one gets outta here alive You know not the day You know not the hour All you know for sure Is that you’re not in power Forget what you learned At your alma mater And contemplate The divine flyswatter Every day Every night We’re just trying to survive Whatever gets you through the day Whatever gets you through the night Whatever No one gets outta here alive A long time from now When you’re dead and gone The whole human race Is gonna carry on On this Earth we’re all just squatters Living in the shadow Of the divine flyswatter You won’t see a tunnel You won’t see a light You won’t see a host of angels Rushing to your side It’s coming for you It’s coming for me And the last thing we see will be The divine flyswatter It’s coming for you It’s coming for me And the very last thing we see will be The divine flyswatter

GOOD STUFF John Soeder © 2011 Sun on my face Wind in my hair It’s only fair You should know Woke up with a song In my heart today And I must find a way To let it show Rainbows and moonbeams and apple pie On the Fourth of July Ain’t it the truth Big rock candy mountain climber Hey old timer Free refills At the fountain of youth I hope you never get enough Of all that good stuff And when the road ahead gets rough Keep your eyes on the good stuff Good stuff Good stuff Free as a bird On a summer day Blue skies point the way Ain’t it divine Save my troubles for another time For now I’m flying high ’Cause you’re a friend of mine I hope you never get enough Of all that good stuff When nights are long and days are tough Don’t forget about the good stuff Good stuff Good stuff Good stuff Good stuff Good stuff I hope you never get enough Of all that good stuff And when the road ahead gets rough Keep your eyes on the good stuff Good stuff Good stuff I hope you never get enough Of all that good stuff When nights are long and days are tough Don’t forget about the good stuff Good stuff Good stuff Woke up with a song In my heart today And I must find a way To let it show

UNTIL I GET IT RIGHT John Soeder © 2011 What did you do babe To get stuck with me When you said “I do” babe Were there bats in your belfry I know I let you down again The other night But I’m doing my best And I won’t rest Until I get it right The king called out his army And the queen deflected blame Don’t it feel like we’re just pawns In somebody else’s game You know it ain’t easy It’s never black and white But I’m not gonna stop I’ll give it all I got Until I get it right Until I get it right Until I get it right I’m doing my best And I won’t rest Until I get it right Alright Until I get it right Until I get it right I’m not gonna stop I’ll give it all I got Until I get it right Hell freezes over And the stars fall into the sea That’ll be the day babe I give up on you and me Saddle up my high horse Hi ho and goodnight Someday I’ll learn I shall return But not until I get it right Saddle up my high horse Hi ho and sleep tight Someday I’ll learn I shall return But not until I get it right Alright

STAND DOWN John Soeder © 2011 In the middle of the night I’m lying awake in bed Too much noise at 3 a.m. Just like Mick Jagger said In the middle of a dream Somebody screams your name Disturbing the peace Like a beast unleashed Is the name of the game You’re a wild one Ooh you’re a wild one Stand down Stand down Stand down Stand down right now Don’t make me come up there again In the middle of it all You’re running down the hall My oh my There’s a riot going on And on and on You’re messing with the wrong guy You’re a wild one Ooh baby you’re a wild one Stand down Stand down Stand down Stand down right now Don’t make me come up there again You’re a wild one Well I got news for you If you’re a wild one Then I’m a wild one too Stand down Stand down Stand down Stand down right now Don’t make me come up there again

HORN BROKEN (WATCH FOR FINGER) John Soeder © 2011 I am a simple man Stick to a simple plan Do unto others as I’d have done to me Easier said than done I come undone Steer clear of me When I’m chewing up the scenery These people cannot drive Drives me up a wall These people cannot drive Drives me up a wall Whoa-oh Whoa-oh Whoa-oh Whoa-oh-oh-oh Horn broken Watch for finger The road ahead is long Let’s sing a driving song 99 bottles of beer on the wall Trust me I counted ’em Got 99 problems But a bottle of beer ain’t one y’all Whoa-oh Whoa-oh Whoa-oh Whoa-oh-oh-oh Horn broken Watch for finger

Hot Potato 01:25
HOT POTATO John Soeder © 2011 You’re a diamond In a rough world Everything is status quo I’m a miner Forty-niner Digging for my pot of gold Who’s your latest Hot potato I suppose it’s all the same From the cradle To the grave Everybody plays the game tonight When you left me On the corner I waited ’til the sun went down Then I saw you Like a kangaroo You were hopping all over town Who’s your latest Hot potato Don’t you want someone to blame From the cradle To the grave Everybody plays the game tonight Who’s your latest Hot potato I suppose it’s all the same From the cradle To the grave Everybody plays the game tonight Who’s your latest Hot potato Don’t you want someone to blame From the cradle To the grave Everybody plays the game tonight

I Was Here 04:05
I WAS HERE John Soeder © 2011 You can carve your initials Into a tree Or leave your footprints In wet concrete Spray paint your name On a wall Do whatever it takes To feel immortal At the end of the day This much is clear At the end of the day Nobody just wants to disappear So I wrote this song To let ’em know I was here I was here Will you leave behind Love and happiness Or will you leave behind One big mess Will a life well-lived Be your legacy Or will you leave behind A sad mystery If you’re really famous They put up a statue of you I ain’t really famous So this will have to do It’s just a little song And it’s called “I Was Here” I was here Ashes to ashes Dust to dust I keep forgetting to remember to forget I keep forgetting to remember to forget Hush now child Don’t you cry Here’s a little something To remember me by Did I make the most Of my time on this Earth What was the point What was it all worth Am I making sense Or am I paranoid Was I true to myself Or was I just pandering to the void Maybe I’m right Maybe I’m wrong Maybe someday When I’m long gone Someone will hear this song And they’ll know I was here I was here Maybe I’m right Maybe I’m wrong Maybe someday When I’m long gone Someone will hear this song They’ll know I was here I was here I was here

Bonniebuns 02:28
BONNIEBUNS John Soeder © 2011 In Briarcliff A tree does bloom White blossoms fall Like winter’s snow When spring returns To my hometown A maiden waits For her true love And when the sun calls it a day I will find My way back O Bonniebuns In your warm glow I am home

about

It’s about time! PANDERING TO THE VOID. All of the songs on this here album trace their origins back to a creative spurt in May 2011, with the exception of “Horn Broken (Watch for Finger),” which was born a few weeks earlier.

So why is the music coming out only now -- nearly six months later? Uh . . . would you believe me if I told you that I got tied up doing yard work?

I’m excited about this particular collection of tunage because it features stellar contributions from two of my favorite musicians in the world, both of whom play guitar and both of whom happen to be named Jim: Jim Cantrell and Jim Gill.

Jim C. and I have been jamming together since we were teenagers, in legendary bands such as Trevor Grey and Never on Sunday. All of his dazzling electric guitar parts on this record – including the magic he conjures on “The Divine Flyswatter,” “Good Stuff” and “For the First Time in a Long Time” – were recorded in a single marathon session. We took only one break, for carbonated beverages -- served in Kiss glasses, of course – and pizza. The dude is amazing.

Jim G. is a top-shelf singer-songwriter who has released multiple fantastic albums of his own and who regularly performs throughout Northeast Ohio. He furnished the delicious acoustic guitar on “Until I Get It Right.” Jim G. and I weren’t even in the same room; I sent him a rough mix of the song, and he generously replied via email with MP3s of four separate guitar parts, which have been woven into the final track. He, too, is amazing. And I would say that even if he weren’t my brother-in-law.

Thank you, Jim C. and Jim G. My humble ditties are infinitely richer because of your gifts.

OK. Enough blahblahblah. It’s time to let the music speak for itself. PANDERING TO THE VOID. I’d be tickled if you gave it a listen – and doubly so if you found something here that floats your boat.
