about

Call it what you will: Easy listening. Exotica. Spage-age bachelor-pad music. Whatever you want to call it, I love it.

NEW EXPERIMENTS IN SOUND VOL. 1 is my attempt to conjure the spirit of some of my favorite composers in that vein, especially Enoch Light and Esquivel. Light's SPACED OUT is a mind-blowingly awesome album, and I'll take anything by Esquivel.

Many of the (mostly) instrumental compositions on this project started out as ideas for full-blown tunes with full-blown lyrics. For whatever reason, they didn't quite come together as originally planned. So I went back and salvaged a bunch of arrangements that had been lying around for too long (in the case of "The Ballad of El Cheapo," since 2009) and repurposed them for this release.

I'm happy this music is finally seeing the light of day. These birdies want to fly!

Several tracks showcase the delicious analog sounds of the mighty microKORG XL, including "I Know of What I Speak (I Think)" (complete with vocoder!), "Stonehenge Sunrise," "Dr. Livingstone, I Presume" and "Dreaming of a Feeling" (more vocoder!).

Yes, "4'33''" is a "cover" of the John Cage classic. Yes, it clocks in at 4:32. I sped it up just a hair.

There's a lot of tomfoolery throughout, but the album ends on a simple note with "Fleur De Lis." That's just me and the piano. No multitracking. No overdubs.

So now you know where I'm coming from. I hope you enjoy NEW EXPERIMENTS IN SOUND VOL. 1. My advice: Fix yourself a highball and turn it up.
