MARTA RECONTEXTUALIZED John Soeder © 2010 When I came across her face In an unexpected place It got me thinking See maybe that’s the problem I never stop to think anymore Always on the run What am I running from What am I running for Birds fly south In a flying-V formation What’s that V stand for I need more information A complete surprise But I saw it with my own eyes Marta Recontextualized Good to see her laughing Good to see her smile At the risk of being seen myself I only looked on for a little while Every frame of reference Is a frame within a frame within a frame The universe is infinite And every single one of us Does multitudes contain Birds fly south In a flying-V formation Could it be V for victory Does it aid with navigation A complete surprise But I saw it with my own eyes Marta Recontextualized Shame on me Now I understand There is so much more to her Than working on weekends at a taco stand Every frame of reference Is a frame within a frame within a frame The universe is infinite And every single one of us Does multitudes contain Birds fly south In a flying-V formation What’s that V stand for Where is the final destination A complete surprise But I saw it with my own eyes Marta Recontextualized

CALL OFF THE GOON SQUAD John Soeder © 2010 Call off the goon squad It’s time to take a bow Things aren’t the way we want them to be But that’s how it has to be for now We held the wolves at bay Kept our heads above the fray Sound the retreat But don’t admit defeat And live to fight another day Call off the goon squad It’s time to take a bow Things aren’t the way we want them to be But that’s how it has to be for now We held the wolves at bay Kept our heads above the fray Exit stage right Don’t let the bedbugs bite We’ll live to fight another day And send the goon squad on its way

THE SILENCE OF THEIR HEARTS John Soeder © 2010 Form a line Form a line Stop your crying You could’ve been a pretender I remember it well The delirious smell Of new crayons in September Amid the fresh start A loved one departs The ambulance speeds past the window Prayers intercede As the siren recedes In the silence of their hearts Red Rover Red Rover Let this one come over Ring Around the Rosie I recall all too well The recess bell Tolling for you and for me At what cost Was innocence lost We schooled ourselves in the dark arts And they all played along But they knew it was wrong In the silence of their hearts They all went along But they knew it was wrong They were screaming your name But I took the blame Let ’em tear me apart And I give you my word The last thing I heard Was the silence of their hearts I give you my word The last thing I heard Was the silence of their hearts

A THOUSAND MILES FROM CLEVELAND John Soeder © 2010 A thousand miles from Cleveland Brother, can you spare a dime Back in the day I heard somebody say Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time Almost got me believing I was in the wrong Nowhere to lay my head Last bus left me here for dead Trapped in a Tom Waits song Hurry down, St. Christopher Send all my love to her Wherever I may roam ’Cause I’m a thousand miles from Cleveland And I wanna go home Another lost weekend Another lost soul Maybe it’s just as well If the road to hell Is paved with good intentions Won’t be any potholes I’m going off the deep end Brother, throw me a line In over my head All the others went to bed Drowning in ways I can’t define Hurry down, St. Christopher Send all my love to her Wherever I may roam ’Cause I’m a thousand miles from Cleveland And I wanna go home A thousand miles from here I can picture it clear When I close my eyes Comes as no surprise It’s like I’m already there Hurry down, St. Christopher Send all my love to her Wherever I may roam ’Cause I’m a thousand miles from Cleveland And I wanna go home Hurry down, St. Christopher Send all my love to her Wherever I may roam I’m a thousand miles from Cleveland And I wanna go home Sweet home

Lost at Sea 02:55
LOST AT SEA John Soeder © 2010 I never saw it coming Until it was too late What have I done What have I done What have I done Hard to starboard Too late God save the Queen And the souls Lost at sea It took a while to sink in The ship was sinking “Neither God nor man…” Or so they said What were they thinking God save the Queen And the souls Lost at sea Women and children first Please remain calm And the band played on “Nearer, My God, to Thee” In the freezing darkness I counted every star twice Then with a final Swift brushstroke That was all she wrote God save the Queen And the souls Lost at sea

ONLY GOOD THINGS John Soeder © 2010 I wish you Only good things Nothing but the very best will do For you A chicken In every pot You got I might be naïve But I believe Dreams come true May the road Rise up To meet you And if it doesn’t May you rise Above that road (Like a UFO) As long as there are songs to sing No matter what tomorrow brings I wish you Only good things I wish you Could see How much you mean To me The wind at your back Not a cloud in the sky Most of all, true happiness The kind you can’t buy May the road Rise up To meet you And if it doesn’t May you rise Above that road (Like a UFO) As long as there are songs to sing No matter what tomorrow brings I wish you Only good things May the road Rise up To meet you And if it doesn’t May you rise Above that road (Like a UFO) As long as there are songs to sing No matter what tomorrow brings I wish you Only good things

about

Welcome to Album No. 7! A few of these songs were left over from the EARBUD SYMPHONICA sessions. The rest came very quickly.

Here's a brief track-by-track:

"Marta Recontextualized": A personal favorite. I'd rather not say what it's about.

"Call Off the Goon Squad": I would like to hear Thom Yorke cover this.

"Words of Wisdom": Self-explanatory.

"If You Got Joy in Your Heart": I love the TV show "Swamp People." This song has nothing to do with hunting alligators, nor is it particularly swampy. Maybe it has a certain bayou joie de vivre?

"Thursday": There are plenty of songs about other days of the week. Written on a Tuesday; recorded on a Friday. Go figure.

"Will the Last One in the Universe Please Turn Out the Lights": A space-rock instrumental, probably inspired by a Pink Floyd jag.

"Greetings from Middleburg Heights": I recently heard from some long-lost pals; this is for them.

"Day of Reckoning": I was paging through Mick Wall's excellent new Led Zeppelin book. Read something about a certain Jimmy Page guitar tuning and set out to do something in that vein. Yes, I know it sounds nothing like Led Zeppelin.

"The Silence of Their Hearts": When we were in grade school, the good sisters often told us to pray in the silence of our hearts. Childhood memories mixed with a recently renewed appreciation for Harry Nilsson.

"A Thousand Miles from Cleveland": The first verse is partly based on a true story involving my being stranded at Woodstook '99. The other verses amount to big fat lies, I guess.

"Lost at Sea": Thinking about the Titanic, for some reason.

"Only Good Things": This is for Colin, Sean and Julia.

Well, there you have it. I hope you were paying attention, because there will be a quiz. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the music!
